The Pit is a (semi) clandestine literary salon dedicated to writing about sex, love, the erotic and its opposites. Formed in July 2025 by Alexandra Symons-Sutcliffe and Caitlin Hall, The Pit meets regularly in a hotel room in East London. Usually there is no audience or documentation. Readers bring their text anonymously and another participant has to read it aloud. This act of performative dispossession, splitting persona from text, is a little like a parlour game. The hotel meetings are the core of The Pit but we have also organised public sessions including at the ICA and work with artists on experimental ways of documenting the event. Collaborators include: Jenna Bliss, Nina Könnemann, and Zoe Williams.

"A walking man eats a peach, sucks on the pit as he pulls it out of his mouth, tosses it away. Camera follows the pit, it rolls off the pavement, along the gutter and into the drain. Zoom out, the darkness expands and contracts into a curly pelt, the pit of a pulpous woman. She is reaching to grab liquor from the top shelf (oak). Maybe she dressed nicely, but her torn sleeve reveals her (pit). She wipes the sweat of her brow (or liquor off her chin) camera pans to hand, it flicks droplets of sweat which land and now belong to (bequeathed to?) a man, who digs a pit already enormous"
